Hot spots

The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson is and interesting story that makes you wonder the lottery is referring to something you are going to win or loose. “Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pocket full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example”(55). This was my first hot spot and I thought it was really funny. When I think about the lottery at first I was thinking about money. I thought that Bobby Martin grabbed rocks so that he could protect his money if he won at first. This was not the case of course so it gave me a good laugh. I thought it was interesting how they never said what the lottery was until the very end until, this technique made me keep getting different ideas of what the lottery might be. I think i am going to try and use this technique one time because it really made want to keep reading in order to find out what it may be.

“It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal company”(62).This was my second hot spot of the lottery. This is where I started to notice that the lottery may not be a good thing. The funny part is this was on the very last page of the text. I picked this because it finally helped me to decided the lottery was a bad thing. When I read this i was still wondering what the black spot meant but I could tell it was a bad thing. This was also a good technique when the black spot was repeated you could tell it was not a positive thing. This really helped to lead to a quick ending of the story that was shortly over soon after.

“ This is true”(93). This is my first hot spot of the story How to Tell a True War Story written by Tim O’brian. I chose this as my first hot spot because it was the first sentence of the story and it caught my attention like no other. I thought it was a very good strong beginning and it made me want to keep reading. Especially after having the word war in the title i wanted to know what was true, and why did O’brian have to come out and say it was true with us not being able to figure it out. This hot spot made the whole story enjoyable for me because I knew nothing was a lie. It made me want to keep reading and figure out what he was talking about.

“ It was still alive, though just barely, just in the eyes”(102). This was the second hot spot I found. This made me get a huge visual because i could imagine the baby buffalo suffering and its big eyes still look at me. I think this was a great use of imagery because it was easy to picture. This made me really say because I love animals but I think the way he used the sentence kept me interested. Since he used such vivid descriptions it was like you can picture him being there and you can imagine the actual thing happening. It also helped you remember the story’s were true since he used such a good description.
